Your office space will have a huge impact on how well you can focus whilst you’re working. Staying focused is what drives productivity in all sectors of work. A good office design can mean the difference between a successful company with happy employees and a non-successful workspace where staff are miserable.
There are a few very simple things that can be done to improve an office environment and the wellbeing of all employees.
Bad lighting can cause a whole manner of health problems for workers and increase irritability and arguments between staff. Working in a dingy office can promote depression. Think about maximising natural light wherever possible and ensure office chairs and office desks are positioned correctly. If possible consider investing in natural light bulbs.
Desks and chairs
Many employees will spend a long time sitting down and working at computers. If their environment isn’t ergonomically suitable, they may develop back problems or issues with eyestrain. Think about equipping an office with adjustable chairs and where possible think about lumbar support as well as cushions. Make that office chair into a throne to keep the employee grumbles at bay.
Ensure there is an adequate amount of storage available in the workspace. Whilst it is true that some individuals are tidier than others, it pays to be able to keep the office as clutter free as possible. If you can ensure that there is a place for everything, and everything is in its place, your workspace will be a shining example of perfect productivity.
Some people run cold, some people run hot. Many office spaces won’t have an adjustable thermostat available to the average employee so be sure to have a heater or two available for the cold-blooded employees in the winter, conversely desk fans available for those who overheat in the summer.
You could have the best employees in the world at your disposal but if there’s a pneumatic drill outside from 9-5 they’re going to struggle to concentrate. If possible ensure that staff have access to noise cancelling headphones.
These are just a few of the simple ways you can adapt an office space to maximise the productivity of your staff. Why not sit down in your next team meeting and see if you can brainstorm some other ideas?
